2007 Gala Story
May 30, 2007 On May 30, 2007, Sesame Workshop hosted its Fifth Annual Benefit Dinner at Cipriani 42nd Street. The benefit was hosted by Matt Lauer and the loveable red Muppet, Elmo, and highlighted Sesame Workshop's leadership and dedication in the areas of literacy and school readiness for all children. The dinner honored Mrs. Laura Bush for her tremendous commitment to promoting early literacy and working for equal opportunity for every child to learn and achieve academic success; and corporate honoree James E. Rohr, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, The PNC Financial Services Group, Inc., for PNC's 10-year, $100 million investment to improve access and quality of early childhood education to benefit children and communities. "This year's benefit is a celebration of Sesame Workshop's almost four decades of accomplishments in promoting literacy and school readiness to millions of children around the world," said Gary E. Knell, President and CEO, Sesame Workshop. "Mrs. Bush is a role model for children, a true global leader in education, and a friend of Sesame Workshop in support of its mission to help children reach their highest potential. We are honored and proud to recognize the First Lady for all of her work towards making a true difference in children's lives. The Workshop also wants to acknowledge Jim Rohr and the PNC Grow Up Great initiative for their incredible support in preparing young children for school and life. School readiness has always been an integral part of our mission and we greatly appreciate their generous contributions." We welcome this occasion to recognize outstanding individuals who share our commitment to helping children reach their highest potential. Former honorees have included The Secretary General of the United Nations and Mrs. Kofi Annan, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Her Majesty Queen Rania Al-Abdullah of Jordan and Ann M. Veneman of UNICEF. This lively evening highlights the Workshop's current programs around the globe and features special Muppet appearances and live entertainment.
